Assertive is a speech act that involves the speaker on the proposition’s truth or a sentence that serves to express the truth of information. An assertive speech act is a natural action that carries out by utterance or speech. Besides, assertive speech acts are also an actual representation that makes other people believe what the speakers say. Therefore, the researcher is interested in researching this topic with research questions: 1) What are the types of assertive speech acts performed in President Donald Trump’s speech at the 2020 RNC? 2) How are the functions of the assertive speech act observed in President Donald Trump’s speech at the 2020 RNC? This research used descriptive qualitative method. The main theories used in this research were John Searle and George Yule. Based on the data analysis of the speech delivered by Donald Trump at the 2020 RNC, the findings showed that Donald Trump’s speech used 39 assertive in which delineated to 23 data on asserting type, 5 data on describing type, 2 data on assessing type, 5 data on complaining type, and 4 data on concluding type. Regarding the second objective, which described the assertive speech act’s functions, the results showed that the speech consisted of 12 illocutionary forces, they were stating, demanding, stressing, elaborating, reporting, clarifying, bragging, boasting, criticizing, informing, protesting, and concluding. From the data analysis results, the researcher concludes that the most widely used assertive type was the asserting type in which many of the utterances contained good or bad statements about himself or his opponent. Furthermore, the most dominant type was the assert or state function, which means that speech types and speech functions contained statements that the listeners trusted his speech.
