Abstract

Politeness strategies are used by mostly people in daily conversation. The use of politeness strategies is useful as a way for both parties to avoid conversations that tend to lead to misunderstanding and miscommunication. Politeness in conversation can be found in all circles, including children. Children who still acquire language from the environment tend to follow what they see and hear. The use of language between children and adults is surely different. Children express their own intentions and make inferences about the intentions of others from early age. In this respect, this research is conducted to reach the following purpose (1) To find out kinds of politeness strategies that applied in children’s utterances in the Kids Meet video and (2) To find out the factors that influence the choice of politeness strategies that applied in children utterances. This research is categorized as qualitative research and use descriptive method to get the result from the data. The data from the research were collected from the conversation in the Kids Meet content in HiHo Channel from YouTube and focused on children utterances. The researcher chooses ten videos that published around early January 2019 until early 2020. This research employs two theories, the first theory is the classifications of politeness strategies based on the theory by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the second theory is the factors affecting the chosen of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this research shows that all the politeness strategies are found in the videos. They are bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy and off record strategy. The result shows that positive politeness is mostly used by children in the ten video that has been analyzed, followed by off record, negative politeness and the least strategy that are used by children is bald-on record. The factor which were found affecting the chosen of the strategies are payoffs and sociological variables.
