Abstract

This study aims at investigating 1) the kinds of language style used by Martin Vail in Primal Fear (1996) movie; 2) the function of language uttered by Martin Vail in the Primal Fear (1996) movie by using Joos’ theory; the five language styles. Qualitative method with content analysis approach is applied in this research. The data were selected by purposive sampling technique. The researcher applied document collection to collect the data from dialogue transcript of the movie. Several steps were taken in analyzing the data; identifying, considering, interpreting, and summarizing. The results showed that there are 86 language styles and 261 language functions used by Martin Vail in Primal Fearmovie. Furthermore, the researcher found that in some occurrences, the place influenced how many language styles Martin Vail used depend on the listener and the time when the conversation is occurred. The casual style is often used in daily conversation while the intimate style, a jargon style, can be used in any situation by condition how close the speaker and listener are in the conversation. Additionally, the language style can be occurred in a same place but not at a same time.
