Abstract

The object that has been chosen in this research is Harper Lee’s novel entitled To Kill a Mockingbird because in this novel there are many wrong perceptions toward someone which symbolized as mockingbird. The relevant theory to support this research is Pierce theory about symbol. Pierce distinguishes sign into three classes: icon, index, and symbol. Symbol in literature is described in this research. In addition, literary symbol is a word or a phrase that signifies an object or something that reference beyond itself. The writer concerns to find out and interpret the symbols and its meaning of mockingbird’s characters through a process that is constructed by the relevant theory. As the qualitative research, it requires theoretical base and reasoning logic. The method which used is library research method. In this case, theory of Charles Sanders Pierce is applied besides the other theories of symbolism. Pierce describes to identify a symbol there must be relationship between object, ground, and interpretant. In analyzing the subject of the materials, this writer uses the structural analysis method. The data of this research is primary and secondary data that contain word, phrase, and sentence which has been identified as symbols. The result of this research is there are three characters symbolized as mockingbird; Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose, and Tom Robinson They are symbolized as mockingbird because of innocence persons who have been blamed for the criminal they never did. As the conclusion, some elements are the symbols that represent some meaning or reference and these symbols are categorized based on Pierce’s theory
