Abstract

Textbook plays an important role in language teaching. Moreover, it seems incomplete for teachers and students without using a textbook in teaching and learning process. The textbook should consist of the materials that appropriate with teaching and learning needs. One of the materials that should be present on the textbook is reading materials. The researcher found this problem in an English textbook for seventh-grade of junior high school. The aims of this research are: (1) to find out the reading materials on English textbook When English Rings a Bell for seventh-grade students at junior high school fulfill the criteria of good reading materials; (2) to find out the teachers’ perception of the reading materials in When English Rings a Bell textbook. This research used the qualitative method. It used descriptive-qualitative study. The techniques to obtain the data are document analysis that is used When English Rings a Bell textbook for seventh-grade junior high school published by Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan to analyze the reading materials on the textbook and the semi-structured interview to find out the teachers’ perception. The data is analyzed by using Patel and Jain’s (2008) theory the criteria of good reading materials. The research found that the reading materials on When English Rings a Bell textbook are categorized into good criteria. The reading materials on the textbook presented the well graded of subject materials, repeating words and structure in the reading texts, also clear instruction in practice and exercise to understand. The teachers’ perception supports the textbook analysis that categorized into good criteria of good reading materials. In summary, the finding shows that the reading materials on When English Rings a Bell textbook for seventh-grade students categorize into good criteria of good reading materials based on Patel and Jain’s (2008) theory. Then, it is recommended for the next research to offers different materials and another theory analyze the textbook.
