Abstract

This research discusses two major concerns. First is to find out kinds of naturalization procedure in cultural words translation used in Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code. The second is to identify categories of cultural words found in Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code. The theories used in this research are Newmark (1988). This research employed qualitative method in collecting and analyzing the data pass through some steps such as reading, selecting, identifying, tabulating and analyzing. There are two main data in this research. Firstly, the data are about kind of naturalization. Secondly, the data are about categories of cultural words. The whole data which are analyzed in this research amounting to 100 data. The result shows that from 100 data taken in Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code, there are four kinds of naturalization. Those are adjustment of spelling and pronunciation consists of 30 data, adjustment of spelling without pronunciation consists of 7 data, adjustment of pronunciation without spelling consists of 9data, and adjustment without spelling and pronunciation consists of 4 data. Secondly, there are five categories of cultural found in Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code. Those are ecology consists of 4 data, material culture consists of 20 data, social culture consists of 09 data, social organization consists of 16 data and gesture and habit consists of 01 data. The result of this research might be drawn as conclusion that the naturalization which is followed by adjustment of the spelling and the pronunciation is the most frequent employed in translating cultural words of Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code as many as 30 data, and material culture is the most frequent categories of cultural words found in this novel as many as 20 data. This implies that naturalization procedure is very important to be researched in translating cultural words, because it can overcome the problems for translators who do not understand about equivalence in translating.
