Abstract

The background of this research is the use of non-verbal communication in communication process. The main issues of this undergraduate thesis are about kinds of non-verbal communication and the functions of non-verbal communication in Insidious Chapter I movie script. The writer used non-verbal communication by DeVito (1978) as the primary theory, Wardaugh (1977) as the secondary theory, and other theories about non-verbal communication to analysis the data found in Insidious Chapter 1 movie script. Qualitative method is used to facilitate in the research. The data have found in Insidious Chapter 1 movie script are 30 data. The movie has been watched, read the movie script, and selected data. The data which have been analyzed are about non-verbal communication. The data have been found 30 which indicated non-verbal communication in the movie script. There are kinesics categories consists of 19 data; 4 data are facial expression categories, 1 data is eyebrows movements category, 7 data are hand movements categories, and 7 data are head movements categories. Paralanguage consist of 7 data; 4 data are pitch and 3 data are non-word sounds. Artifact consists of 4 data. The six functions of non-verbal communication are emphasize (10), repeat (1), complement (8), contradict (1), regulates (5), and replacement (6). The conclusions of this research are found kinds of non-verbal, as like: kinesics, paralanguage and artifact but not found about proxemics. The six functions of non-verbal communication are emphasizing, repeat, complement, contradict, regulates, and replacement. Not all messages which are delivered from the communicator can be got and understood by the communicant. Therefore, the communicator uses non-verbal communication to communicate.
