Abstract

This research tells about The Assessment of Translation Quality in Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com that discusses three statement of problems, they are: 1) How is the accuracy of translation result of Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com? 2) How is the clarity of translation result of Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com? and 3) How is the naturalness of translation result of Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com? To analyze these problems, the researcher used the theory of Larson. This theory helps the researcher to analyze the data finding in order to know the translation quality of Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com, and the researcher asked for help of an expert to validate the results of analysis. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research because it describes about a situation or event of particular field. The source of data is the English article on The Jakarta Post. The article is about religion entitled “Ramadhan is likely to fall on Saturday” was posted on June 27 2014, 9:03 AM. In collecting the data, the researcher chose an article on Jakarta Post, opened the website of Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com, and then translated the article from English to Bahasa by using Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com. The result showed that the translation quality of Bing Translator calculating all the point for all the sentences is 1) Accuracy: (a) bad score is 13 points, (b) fair score is 14 points, (c) good score is 0 point, (d) excellent score is 0 point, 2) Clarity: (a) bad score is 18 points, (b) fair score is 4 points, (c) good score is 0 point, (d) excellent score is 0 point, (3) Naturalness: (a) bad score is 17 points, (b) fair score is 6 points, (c) good score is 0 point, (d) excellent score is 0 point. Meanwhile, Translation quality of FreeTranslation.com calculating all the points for all the sentences is: : 1) Accuracy: (a) bad score is 11 points, (b) fair score is 16 points, (c) good score is 3 points, (d) excellent score is 0 point, 2) Clarity: (a) bad score is 13 points, (b) fair score is 14 points, (c) good score is 0 point, (d) excellent score is 0 point, (3) Naturalness: (a) bad score is 14 points, (b) fair score is 12 points, (c) good score is 0 point, (d) excellent score is 0 point. In this research, it is concluded that the scores which were given by the researcher for Bing Translator and FreeTranslation.com were validated by the expert, and the most score for all of the sentences is bad for the accuracy, clarity, and naturalness aspect. As dominant score is bad, it is suggested to students of English Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung not use these kinds of translation tools.
