Abstract

Interest is individual's tendency towards something that can encourage the person to learn deeper a topic, situation or information. Cheung (2018) and Chen & Darst (2001)classified the meterial, teaching method, environment, and task as aspects that trigger students' interest in online learning because students who have interest in learning tend to show positive attitude towards learning outcomes and show high statisfaction. This study applied a qualitative research design. The participants were six students of the third-grade at MTs (Junior High School) Darussalam in the academic year 2020/2021. The participants in this study were selected purposively based on the writer's need. To obtain the data, questionnaires and interviews were used. The questionnaire was conducted to find out the factors affecting students’ interest in English online learning while, the interview was used to find out students’ attitudes toward English online learning. The findings of this study reveal that: (1) based on the level of students' English proficiency, they have different aspects that can trigger their interest in English online learning: (a) Advanced-level students' interest was triggered by the material in English online learning, (b) the intermediate-level students' interest was triggered by the method in English online learning, and (c) beginner-level student' interest was triggered by the task of English online learning; (2) generally, students showed a positive response to English online learning that had given them easiness and effectiveness in learning English. In conclusion, this study presents that the students’ level has a different aspect that triggered their interest: this study was recommended for the teacher or practican teachers to determine several factors affecting students’ interest in English online learning.
