Abstract

The interference has become a phenomenon in Indonesian society today particularly in the phonological scope. This can also happen to people as famous as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The object in this research is Susilo Bambang yudhoyono’s English speech. The aim of this research are to describe (1) What English phonemes that are interfered by Javanese phonemes in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s English Speech. (2) What are the factors that influence the English phonemes interference by Javanese phonemes in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s English Speech. This research is based on the theory put forward by Weinreich regarding phonological interference which states that phonological interference is the result of the speaker's way of speaking the sounds of the language. The research is a descriptive research. This research uses a qualitative design as this study uses research data that is not in the form of numbers, but in the form of words or phrases. The technique used in the observation method in this research is the technique of listening to the proficient involvement, which means that the researcher is not directly involved in determining the formation and appearance of prospective data, and the researcher does not have a direct dialogue with the object of research. Researchers only pay attention to linguistic events that occur in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's English Speech. The step is followed by the note-taking technique with recording all the words contained in the data source according to their authenticity. From the results of data from six English speeches of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, there are five types of English phonemes that interfered into Javanese, they are four consonants (/b/, /d/, /g/, /dʒ/) and one vowel (/æ/). Phoneme /b/ contains 13 interfered words, while phoneme /d/ contains 18 interfered words. The phoneme /g/ contains 7 interfered words. The phoneme /dʒ/ contains 9 interfered words. And for the phoneme /æ/, there are 2 interfered words. English as a donor language causes interference to the use of absorbent language. In addition, the invention also proved two factors causing the phonological interference as expressed by Weinreich. In the end, researchers concluded that the mother language system was the most affecting for speakers.
