Abstract

This research deals with analyze of synonymy in three English translation versions of Juz ‘Amma (Juz 30) of The Holy Quran. The researcher only took five surahs from Juz ‘Amma, that is Surah An-Naba, An-Nazi’at, ‘Abasa, At-Takwir, and Al-Infithar. This research focuses on discussing two points by choosing two theories. First, based on Lyons theory, synonymy can be defined as a linguistic term that has the same meaning, or only similar meanings. It happens, because the words having synonyms can occur in the forms of word, phrase, clause, and sentence. Second, based on Cruse theory, synonymy has three types, namely absolute synonymy, cognitive synonymy, and near synonymy (plesionymy). Furthermore, this research uses comparative method, because the researcher analyzes and compares similarities and differences of synonymy found in the English translation version of five surahs in Juz ‘Amma (Juz 30) translated by Arthur John Arberry, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, and Maulana Muhammad Ali. The steps are collecting of five surahs in Juz ‘Amma by three translators, then selecting the words that included into synonymy. Afterwards, classify the data that consists of word, phrase, clause, and sentence into types of synonymy. Lastly, compare and analyze the data. As the result of this research, there were 57 data of words having synonyms and its types. That is consists of 42 data in the form of words, 10 data of phrases, and 1 data of clauses. However, there is no result for synonyms in the form of sentences. Moreover, the researcher found 3 data of words synonymous with phrases, and 1 data of clauses synonymous with sentences. Further, for its types, the researcher did not find absolutely synonymy. Those 57 data consist of 3 data of cognitive synonymy, and 54 data of near synonymy (plesionymy). Therefore, the data of synonymy are dominated by the form of words and the type of near synonymy (plesionymy).
