Abstract

The adventure novel is a fictional genre that tells about adventure, an exciting endeavor involving physical risks and dangers, which form the main storyline. As the adventure novel used in this research is The Catching Fire. The researcher interests to discuss the masculinity of the heroine to this novel. The research questions are about the heroism (heroine) and the masculinity of the heroine in The Catching Fire. This Research aims to know the heroism (heroine) and the masculinity of the heroine in The Catching Fire. The main theories of this research are Bernstein dan Hourihan about heroism and female masculinity to answer first and second question and supported theories in this research from Halberstam and R.W Connell about hero character and masculinity to answer both of question. The method of this research is qualitative method. Application of the method of qualitative research means the data generated in the form of words or sentences in the form of quotations. For the results, the researcher analyzes the masculinity of the heroine as reflected by the main character (Katniss) in the novel. The first analysis explains that Katniss can be fitted as the heroine since she follows the stages of the hero’s adventure. The second analysis explains that through her character, Katniss shows heroism as female masculinity. In conclusion, the masculinity of the heroine in Suzanne Collins' The Catching Fire can clearly know that the heroism (heroine) as the main character is masculinity of the heroine.
