Abstract

In the present time, it has been found that many students are lack of interest toward reading activities especially the ones related to reading comprehension. It can be caused by several factors. First, they did not understand what text they read about. Second, the strategy that is used in learning process is not appropriate with the students. The researcher found these problems in one of junior high schools in Bandung at second grade. This research is aimed : (1) To find out the result of students reading comprehension in learning descriptive text before being taught by using RIDER strategy (2) To find out the process of implementing RIDER strategy in learning descriptive text (3) To find out the result of students reading comprehension in learning descriptive text after being taught by using RIDER strategy (4) To find out the effectiveness of RIDER strategy in improving students reading comprehension in learning descriptive text. This research uses mixed method using explanatory sequential design analysis. It used a pre-experimental study. The participants of this research was twenty students of 8th grade of SMP PGRI 10 Bandung. The class was taken by school as the sample. The instrument of this research is pre-test, observation checklist, and post-test. The result of mean scores of the pre-test is 49 and the post-test is 75.75. It means that there is improvement of students’ reading comprehension in learning descriptive text by using RIDER (Read, Imagine, Describe, Evaluate, Repeat) strategy. The result from the computation by using SPSS 16 showed that Paired Sample T-Test statistic of significance (2 tailed) in table 4.15 is 0.000. It can be interpreted that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension in learning descriptive by using RIDER strategy. In teaching reading descriptive text by using RIDER strategy, the teaching and learning process ran in three stages. These stages are contained in the observation checklist, those are pre-teaching activities, whilst-teaching activities, and post-teaching activities.
