Abstract

Translation is a process of transferring messages from one language to another language through writing or the text. However, if people need to get new knowledge from another language which is different from their mother language, it should be learned. Social media is the media that uses in this study to make the quality of students’ translation work is good, because nowadays, many people interact or communicate using social media. This study are aimed: (1) To find out the students’ translation methods of using social media in students’ translation work, (2) To find out the effects of using social media to university students' translation work. It were conducted in the fourth semester of the academic year 2018-2019. The participants of this research were six students of fourth semester, which the sample was selected by the purposeful sampling of English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Sunan Gunung Djati Islamic University Bandung. The data was obtained from document analysis and interview. The data analysis was presented by describing the finding of translation method of students’ translation work using social media. The finding of this research shows that in the first sentences there are three of six participants using faithful translation, one of six participants using word for word translation, one of six participants using literal translation, and one other using free translation. In the second sentences, there are four of six participants using communicative translation and two of six participants using word for word translation. In the third sentences there are five of six participants using communicative translation and one other using free translation. In the fourth sentences five of six participants using communicative translation and one other using free translation. The last, in the fifth sentences until the seventh sentences all participants using communicative translation method in translating the text. The effects of using social media to students' translation work based on interview of six participants are divided into two categories. The first is time management and the second is the quality of students’ translation work. In the first catagories we see that using social media can accelerate time, can be easier in the process of collecting students’ translation work, and can simplify the translation work. In the second categories we know that using social media are quite helpful especially for English Students more easier and simpler, every student can correct each other work, every student can compare the result of their translation work, easy to interact and can be seen by many people. Therefore, each student can improve the results of their translation work using social media. In conclusion, this research shows that social media is useful for the translation learning process. This study is recommended for those who want to build a good translator.
