Abstract

Short story is one of the literary works that tell stories about human life and its intricacies through short writing. It is also a fictional essay that contains the person's life or the life told concisely and focused on one character only. Short story usually contains less than 10,000 words or less than 10 pages and it directly explains the story with simple form than novel. As for the short story as a literary work does not directly stand up just like that, there are some elements that build short stories constructed by intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Character and characterization is one of focus in intrinsic elements .Characters are the life of literature: they are the objects of our curiosity and fascination, affection and dislike, admiration and condemnation. Indeed, so intense is our relationship with literary characters that they oftencease to be simply ‘objects’ When we speak about character, we refer to the people which undergo the experiences in fantasy fictions. Character and characterization have a relationship with each other which cannot be separated. In the story, it must have a character and characterization to support what the story tells about. The object of this study is to find out the characters and characterization in selected short stories by Juliana Horatia ewing. The researcher tries to describe, explain, and analyze the Characters and characterization using Abrams M H theory. In this research, the researcher has analyzed the written text from the short stories by focusing this research on characters and characterization. The result of this research The researcher found that there are many kinds of characters in selected short stories by Juliana Horatia Ewing, from many characters which are presented in every story, most of them presented using telling method (characterizations method).
