Abstract

This study is intended: 1) to know the difficulties pronouncing of similar sound of word 2) to know the students more be aware of similar sound. 3) to know the effectiveness of teaching pronouncing English similar word for the ability of student in English. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effect of teaching pronunciation in oral test through minimal pair technique toward students understanding of the similar sound of word. The pronunciation involved one class of the second-grade students of SMP Triyasa Ujung Berung Bandung that become the experimental group. The Class consists of 28 students as a participant. The experimental group was taught by using minimal pair technique as a treatment. The data were obtained from the pretest and posttest in the class. The pretest and posttest have consisted of oral test. After administering the pretest and posttest, the data were calculated into statistical analysis of normality test, homogeneity test, hypothesis test, and cohen’s d test. There was a significant different in students understanding of similar word after using minimal pair technique. In other word the result of the study showed that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Then based on the cohen’s d the result of minimal pair technique had a large effect on students’ pronunciation ability in similar word with the result of the posttest in the experimental group of 73.68 for the mean score. The improvement of experimental group after using minimal pair technique was higher than the pretest score which is 52.68. Furthermore, the students felt motivated and enjoyed the learning process with a minimal pair. Based on the research, it can be conclude that minimal pair is effective to improve students’ ability in pronouncing similar sound of words.
