Abstract

This research paper entitled The Struggle of Life of the Main Character in Bernard Malamud`s The Fixer`. This paper describes the struggle of life condition that is done by Yakov, the main character in Bernard Malamud's The Fixer, in gaining his dream to be a rich man in the forbidden town for Jews. The data of struggle of life are taken from the novel of Bernard Malamud entitled The Fixer and those data are analyzed through descriptive method. In analyzing the struggle of life data, the researcher uses some steps, firstly, identifying the conversations of the characters and narration of the writer in Bernard Malamud's The Fixer; secondly, classifying the struggle of life data related to the research problems, thirdly, interpreting the data particularly in Marxist criticism; finally, finding conclusions based on the results of the research. Furthermore, the results of this analysis are: there are four factors make Yakov has to struggle in the forbidden town in Russia, they are: politic; economy; social-status; and religion. Then, in struggling his life Yakov is forced to do some efforts such as changing his identity and following the rules of Russian government. In addition, in the story, the writer conveys moral values through his novel. The writer conveys that everyone has to work hard in making our dream come true. Then, everyone has his or her own way in gaining his or her dreams. Believing that `when there`s a will, there`s way.
