Abstract

The research analyzes the connotative meaning in economic articles of The Jakarta Post. The assumption that an economic article that has full of economic term and the topic is around economic activity has neutral feeling only bring the research focused on the economic terms that have connotative meaning and what is the feeling inside. The theory of the research, Geoffrey Leech for describing connotative meaning and I.A Richard as supporting theory for categorizing the feeling. The method of the research is qualitative to analyze the data. The source of data is taken from The Jakarta Post newspaper on April 2018 edition. The technique of collecting data is documentation studies. The result of the research is many economic terms have connotative meaning, because they have meaning above the conceptual meaning. On the other hands, those economic terms have several kinds of feeling as indicator of connotative meaning. Therefore, it can be concluded that the research breaks the assumption that economic article has neutral feeling only. Actually, the economic article has more than one feeling, they are positive, negative and neutral. From the research can find out the formula of distinguishing the positive, negative and neutral feelings in connotative meaning. The positive feeling can be seen that the word are value, cherish, care about and there is a supporting word, phrase, clause or sentence that is the positive feeling; the word has negative feeling is avoided or disvalue, there is the supporting word that is negative feeling; the neutral feeling can be seen the context of the sentence, it just gives information or instruction, the word that has connotative meaning is an object of the information or the instruction, and there is not a supporting word either positive or negative.
