Abstract

Edward Prendick are the main character who undertake aggressive behaviour. The aggressive behaviour showed by main character as response of external factors which made aggressive drive appear in action or thought. Therefore, the researcher formulates the problems into some research questions, what are the causes of aggressive behaviour of main character Edward Prendick in The Island of Dr Moreau? how are inner conflicts influences of main character Edward Prendick in The Island of Dr Moreau? The researcher used theory of psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud. The researcher uses qualitative study in analysing data. The researcher identifying the data, analysing the data, interpreting the data to find out the causes of aggressive behaviour and the inner conflicts in Edward Prendick. Edward Prendick is portrayed as having carried out aggressive behavior. The portrayal characteristics of aggressive behaviour have intention to harm oneself, other or objects in the environment. The causes of this act are atmospheric factors, unpleasant events, disputes over scarce resource, presence of strangers, and weapons. The factors induce inner conflicts are fear of betrayal, fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, loneliness, depression, guilt, sadness, and phobia. Edward Prendick live in the island with strange creatures, psycho scientist, drunken assistant, and dangerous situation so, doing aggressive behaviour is one of solution to reduce the problem faces. This research could be useful as information of aggressive behaviour and the causes which explained in Ramirez’s theory. For the next researcher who want to analyse the novel, postmodernism approach is worthy to consider.
