Abstract

The research aims to find out the relationship between students’ intrinsic motivation of self-determination in learning listening and their listening achievement. This research proposed by Deci and Ryan’s Theory (2009) uses as students’ motivation in learning listening and this study on listening achievement proposed by Wolvin’s (2009) uses as listening comprehension in an educational context of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Rancaekek-Bandung. The respondents are 44 students at the eleven-grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Rancaekek-Bandung in the 2017/2018 academic year. The method used in this research is a quantitative method through correlational research design. The instruments used in the research were the students’ motivation in learning listening questionnaire with 28 statements and the listening comprehension test taken from the National exam with 20 questions. The results from both of the instruments were calculated and analyzed by using the statistical procedure of Pearson r correlation formula to find out if there was a significant relationship between the two variables. The result of this research showed that 80% respondents had low motivation in learning listening. However, 68% students’ listening score was categorized as good. Furthermore, correlation result of the Pearson Product Moment is 0.235 then the result from 5% significance level from r-table is 0.297. So the correlation result is smaller than r-table or it can be stated that r_xy is smaller r"table" ; 0.235 is smaller than 0.297. It means that the study gets a conclusion that there is no correlation between students’ intrinsic motivation and their listening achievement in SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Rancaekek. Therefore, it is suggested that the teachers have to find the appropriate strategy in teaching English especially in listening creatively with more practice the students can improve their listening skill. Futhermore, the teachers should increase the students’ motivation, especially in learning listening in language material which tell them that listening is the important thing in communication. Moreover, if students aware of the critical role of motivation, and the resulting score will be better than this study.
