Abstract

People often suppose that making error in speech is a natural thing However it is a mistake that they often do not realize. The researcher is interested in discussing speech errors experienced by students’ speaking performance, and the factors that cause the errors. Thirty students of the fourth semester of English Department in State Islamic University of Bandung in academic year 2016 are involved as the participants. This research uses qualitative descriptive method by specifically employing techniques such as audio recording and questionnaire added by news sheet as the instrument to collect the data. Then, the theory of speech errors by (Clark & Clark, 1977, p. 263) and (Aitchison, 1998, pp. 240-247) are adopted to analyze the data. The result of the analysis shows that there are 411 data of speech errors which consist of 130 utterances containing filled pause, 106 utterances containing repeats, 99 utterances containing silent pause, 34 utterances containing retraced false starts, 16 utterances containing unretraced false starts, 13 utterances containing stutters, 6 utterances containing corrections, 5 utterances containing interjections, and the last 2 utterances belongs to slip of the tongue. Then, the researcher finds 3 factors that cause speech errors in students’ speaking performance, there are: social reason, psychological reason, and cognitive reason. Social reason, occurs when the speakers are affected by friend’s attention and surrounding in the class. Psychological reason, is when the speakers are possible to feel nervous when they speak in front of many people. The last is cognitive reason, that is, when the speakers are difficult when they get unusual topic discuss. Finally, the researcher can conclude that Filled pause is the dominant of speech errors and social reason is the dominant factor that cause of speech errors.
