Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing directive and commissive speech acts uttered by the main character of Spotlight movie script. There are two research question formulated in this research. The first is about how are the directives and commissives act uttered by the main character of Spotlight movie and the next is how is the power of the main character indicated by his utterances’ the effect on the addressee. This research is categorized as qualitative research due to the result of data analysis is in the form of exposure related to the situation of the research study that is presented in narrative description form that performs the types of directives and commissives act that the main characters of Spotlight movie uttered together with the situation context of related utterances and also an analysis of power that the main character has that determines the effect that the hearer gets in narrative description form. In the final analysis, this research has a result that there are 44 data findings which occupy each type of directives or commissives act. directives act have 37 data with the following details; 13 utterances of asking, 11 utterances of ordering, 6 utterances of commanding, 4 utterances of requesting, and 3 utterances of advising. While there are 7 commissives act found in this research with the following details; 4 utterances of promising, an utterance of offering, and 2 utterances of threatening. As the next result of the second discussion, the main character of Spotlight movie takes three kinds of power in society, there are superior, equal, and inferior. To differ the power he had, it can be seen from how the addressee gives him a respond as an effect of his utterances. There are several effects found based on his power. the first is when the addressee do what he says or orders, the next is the addressee refuses his orders, and the last is the addressee orders him back.
