The researcher used the sociological approach of literature as well as Lonni Lee Best's theory to identify the kind of hypocrisy of Arthur Dimmesdale and other supporting theories about the doctrine of the Puritans. From the research that has been done, it can be concluded that Arthur Dimmesdale is a hypocritical Puritan clergyman. The hypocrisy of Arthur Dimmesdale according to Lonni Lee Best's theory belongs to the Dishonest External hypocrite. As for the causes of hypocrisy there are several things, including; his hypocrisy was due to the role of his social status as a Puritan clergyman, his uncertainty towards the Puritan doctrine itself and the public's expectation of his figure as Puritan clergyman. . Dimmesdale's hypocrisy is also a form of Puritan doctrine filled with fanaticism, intolerance and hypocrisy. The Puritans applied the basic principles of their teaching to the people of Massachusetts with an intolerant attitude. Anyone deemed to be violating and incompatible with the Puritan teachings will be granted sanctions of being caught and cruelly punished. The Puritans' attitude makes them a hypocrite. Because on the one side they seem to be religious and religious-looking with their mission who want to purify Christianity and in accordance with the Gospel, but on the other side they are doing acts that are not incompatible with the teachings of religion.
