Abstract

In communicating the listener must understand the purpose of speech by the speakers. To understand an utterance or phrase can use deiksis. This study addresses the use of each type of deixis as the mean and function of each deiktic expression in each type of deixis in the English translation of surah Al-Kahf from Abdullah Yusuf Ali. To determine the research, the researcher divides this analysis into two research questions, namely: 1). What kinds of deixis and deictic expression are used in the English translation of surah Al-Kahf by Abdullah Yusuf Ali? 2). What is the meaning of each kinds of deixis used in the English translation of surah Al-Kahf by Abdullah Yusuf Ali? To answer these problems researchers use the deixis theory of George Yule and supported by other theories. This research uses qualitative descriptive method to explain and analyze all data. The results of the study illustrate two findings. First, when looking for a type of deixis, the researcher identifies every verse that denotes a deictic expression, there are three kinds of deixis based on Yule's theories of person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. Secondly, in the data from surah Al-Kahf, the use of each type of deixis in surah Al-Kahf analyzes the intent of each type of deixis depending on the context, and to be more instructive in adding the supporting instrument of the tafsir of Ibn Kathir. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of deixis kinds in English translation of surah Al-Kahf there are many similar deictic expressions but differentiate the mean and purpose of each kinds of deixis. Theoretically, this research is expected to contribute to the development of pragmatic theory, especially in the theory of deixis in order to expand the discussion of deixis in pragmatic. Practically, this study may reveal some types of problems dealing with deixis that can be applied in English translation of the Qur'an and help the reader to study the function and purpose of the utterances contained in the English translation of the Qur'an. Dalam berkomunikasi pendengar harus mengerti maksud atau tujuan ujaran oleh para pembicara. Untuk memahami suatu ujaran atau ungkapan dapat menggunakan deiksis. Penelitian ini membahas penggunaan dari tiap jenis deiksis seperti maksud dan fungsi dari tiap ungkapan deiktik dalam tiap jenis deiksis dalam terjemahan Bahasa Inggris surah al-Kahf dari Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Untuk menentukan penelitian, peneliti membagi analisis ini menjadi dua pertanyaan penelitian, yaitu: 1). Apa jenis deiksis dan bentuk ungkapan deiktik yang digunakan dalam terjemahan bahasa Inggris dari surah al-Kahf oleh Abdullah Yusuf Ali? 2). Apa maksud dari masing-masing jenis deiksis yang digunakan dalam terjemahan bahasa Inggris dari surah al-Kahf oleh Abdullah Yusuf Ali? Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut peneliti menggunakan teori deiksis dari George Yule serta didukung dengan teori lainnya. Penelitian in menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk mejelaskan dan menganalisis seluruh data. Hasil penelitian tersebut menggambarkan dua temuan. Pertama, saat mencari jenis deiksis, peneliti mengidentifikasi setiap ayat yang menunjukkan ungkapan deiktik, terdapat tiga jenis deiksis berdasarkan teori Yule diantaranya persona deiksis, spasial deiksis, dan temporal deiksis. Kedua, Dalam data dari surah al-Kahf, penggunaan dari tiap jenis deiksis dalam surah al-Kahf menganalisis maksud dari masing-masing jenis deiksis tergantung pada konteksnya, dan agar lebih terarahkan penelitipun menambahkan alat pendukungnya yaitu tafsir dari Ibnu Katsir. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan jenis deixis dalam terjemahan Bahasa Inggris surat al-Kahf terdapat banyak ungkapan deiktik yang sama namun berbeda maksud dan tujuannya dari tiap jenis deiksis tersebut. Secara teoritis, penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi pada perkembangan teori pragmatik terutama dalam teori deixis agar dapat memperluas pembahasan tentang deixis dalam pragmatik. Secara praktis, penelitian ini dapat mengungkapkan beberapa jenis maslah yang berhubungan dengan deixis yang dapat diaplikasikan dalam terjemahan Qur’an Bahasa Inggris dan membantu pembaca untuk mepelajari fungsi dan tujuan dari ujaran yang terkandung dalam terjemahan Qur’an Bahasa Inggris.
