Abstract
ABSTRACT Masrifah, Siti. 1175030255 “ Psychological Conflicts of The Main Character In The Film Shang Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings”. An Undergraduate Thesis, English Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Islamic State University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Advisors 1 : Deuis Sugaryamah, M.Pd. . 2 Yoga Sudarisman, M.A. Keywords : Psychological Conflict, Psychoanalytic, Conflict, Hero’s Journey, Shang Chi. Psychological conflict is a conflict that occurs in a person's mind or heart. Likewise, in the film Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Shang Chi, the main character in the film, experiences a psychological conflict caused by the pain of his mother's death. Aside from that, the film has a super hero story that is represented in Asian culture about Shang Chi's journey in discovering his identity, as well as an intriguing mixed storyline. So in describing it, the question arises as to what narrative elements are in the film, apart from that what types of psychological conflicts did Shang Chi experience, and how did Shang Chi resolve his psychological conflicts. The descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study. The theories used in analyzing this study are Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory (1923) and the theory of conflict types from Kurt Lewin (1935), which are used in analyzing the psychological conflicts that occur in Shang Chi. As well as the hero's journey theory by Joseph Campbell (1949) which is used in analyzing the plot sequence in the film Shang Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings. The results of this study show that the psychological conflict experienced by Shang Chi was divided into two sessions: guilt and disappointment. Based on these two feelings, Shang Chi found the type of conflict that happened to him. Shang Chi uses ego defense mechanisms with the theory of Sigmund Freud (1923) to resolve every conflict that occurs due to differences of opinion between the ego, id, and superego in himself.
