Abstract

ENGLISH : Transitive verbs are verbs that need an object in the sentence. They can be found in a variety of written works, one of which is the novel. Therefore, a novel cannot be separated from transitive verbs. They, which are one of the topics in syntax, are divided into mono-transitive verbs, di-transitive verbs, and complex-transitive verbs. Therefore, the focus of this research is to find out what transitive verbs are found in the novel entitled The Great Gatsby and how they are constructed. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to collect data. The theory used in this study are Linda Thomas' theory (1993) about transitive verbs, Andrew Radford's (2004) theory about tree diagrams, and Wang's theory (2010) as supporting theories. Based on the results of data analysis, there are 93 data of mono-transitive verbs, 7 data of transitive verbs, and 5 data of complex-transitive verbs. The conclusion of this research is that the most used transitive verb in The Great Gatsby is mono-transitive verb. Because, to make easier the reders feel they are like in the story of the novel. INDONESIA : Kata kerja transitif adalah kata kerja yang membutuhkan objek dalam sebuah kalimat. Kata kerja transitif dapat ditemukan di berbagai macam karya tulis, contohnya novel. Maka dari itu, dalam sebuah novel tentunya tidak lepas dari kata kerja transitif. Kata kerja transitif merupakan salah satu pembahasan dalam siktaksis. Kata kerja transitif terbagi menjadi 3, yaitu: mono-transitive verb, di-transitive verb, dan complex-transitive verb. Oleh karena itu, fokus penelitian ini untuk mengetahui kata kerja transitif apa saja yang terdapat pada novel yang berjudul The Great Gatsby dan bagaimana cara mengkontruksikanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualiatif untuk mengumpulkan datanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Linda Thomas (1993) tentang transitif verb, teori Andrew Radford (2004) tentang diagram pohon, dan teori wang (2010) sebagai teori pendukung. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, terdapat 93 data mono-transitive verb, 7 data di-transitive verb, dan 5 data complex-transitive verb. kesimpulan dari penelitian ini, kata kerja transitif yang paling banyak digunakan dalam novel The Great Gatsby adalah mono-transitive verb. Karena, agar dapat mempermudah pembaca untuk mempermudah pembaca merasa ada dalam cerita novel tersebut. Kata Kunci: Kata kerja transitif, siktaksis, The Great Gatsby
