Abstract

Twitter is one of social media that can be used to share short posts up to 280 characters. In its use, the users commonly convey their messages using slang words. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the types and functions of slang words used by K-Pop fans on Twitter. Conducting this research, qualitative method was used to answer the research questions. The 83 data were gained from Reply and Quoted Tweets of @theseoulstory's tweets by K-Pop fans on Twitter that contained slang words. The theory used in this study were Partridge's theory (2013) to analyze the types of slang words and Allan & Burridge's theory (2006) to analyze the function of slang words. Based on the data analysis, the findings showed that there were five types of slang words: society slang words, internet slang words, slang words in art, slang words in public school and university, and soldier slang words. Meanwhile, there were seven functions of slang words: to initiate relax, to express impression, to address, to reveal anger, to show intimacy, to humiliate, and to form intimate atmosphere. Society slang words and internet slang words were used most by K-Pop fans on Twitter than any other types because those slang words are common in everyday and digital conversations. Another type of slang words used by K-Pop fans on Twitter was related to art (slang in art) because K-Pop is related to music. Meanwhile, slang words in public school and university and soldier slang words were the least used types of slang words. Moreover, K-Pop fans on Twitter mostly used slang words to initiate relax, while the least used function was to form intimate atmosphere.
