Abstract

This study was intended to determine students' writing skills using Duolingo application. These reasons include sentence structure, vocabulary, and fluency in writing. One of the goals of Duolingo application is to develop students writing skills. The aims of this research are: First, to find out about students’ writing skills with using Duolingo application. Second, to find out about students’ writing skills without using Duolingo application. Third, this research determines the effects of the Duolingo application on students’ writing skills in seventh grade MTs Negeri 2 Garut. This study used quantitative method with a quasi-experimental approach. The participant of this research included seventh grade of junior high school at MTs Negeri 2 Garut. The result showed that the statistical analysis of pre-test and post-test scores significantly increased in the experimental class. The average of the students on the pre-test was 44.29, while the average on the post-test was 70.00. Meanwhile, Statistical analysis of pre-test and post-test scores showed a significant increase in the control class. The average of the students on the pre-test was 43.57, while the average on the post-test was 58.93. However, Statistical calculations from post-test scores show that the Duolingo application effectively increase students' writing skills. This is evidenced by the results of paired sample T-test, was 0.000 less than 0.05. Furthermore, the N-Gain analysis, the gain score was 0,54. It signifies that the score higher than 0.3 (0.54>0.3), based on the category, the interpretation is average. Thus, it means Duolingo application influences students’ writing skills. This could be seen from their improvement in writing scores in the post-test. To conclude, Duolingo application can be implemented as one of the methods to improve students’ writing skills at the seventh grade of MTs Negeri 2 Garut, as shown there is a significant improvement in students’ writing skills. This is recommended to teachers, who would like to use this application to teach English lesson and for students who would like to use this application, meanwhile further researchers also may adopt it as the references for their study.
