Abstract

This study determines the context of vocabulary problems faced by students in VIII-A class at SMPN 1 Gunung Putri in learning English. These reasons include the least number of words, difficulty pronouncing, and memorizing the meaning of words. Based on the issues, three objectives are proposed. First, this study investigates how well students know words before using word chain applications. Second, this study investigates how well students know words after using the word chain applications. Third, this study examines whether the effect of the use of word chain applications on student vocabulary mastery is significant or not. This study used a quantitative method and a pre-experimental research design with one group pre-test and post-test. This study's instrument is a written test. The tests are pre-test and post-tests to determine students' basic vocabulary before and after treatment. This study's population consisted of one class of 35 students’. For data analysis in this study, SPSS version 25 was used. Based on the pre-test results, the data indicates that the means score of the pre-test score is 48.43. It showed that almost all students' scores were still low. It can be conclude that students vocabulary befor using word chain application is weak. Regarding the second research question, based on the post-test result, the data indicates that the means score of the pre-test is 98.71. This study demonstrates that students vocabulary improved, pronouncing well and understand vocabulary after using the word chain application. Regarding the last research question, this study demonstrate that word chain applications are effective. This proved that the average result of the means of the post-test is higher than the pre-test (98.71>48.43). This indicates that students' vocabulary mastery has improved. The result, the sig, two-tailed value in the t-test, was 0.000, less than 0.05. The alternative hypothesis was accepted, and the null hypothesis was rejected because the word chain application significantly affected the vocabulary mastery of the students in VIII-A class SMPN 1 Gunung Putri. In conclusion, the application of word chain applications is effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, after using the word chain application, students vocabulary improved, pronouncing well and understand vocabulary after receiving treatment. As a result, word chain applications are an educational game for English teaching.
