Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between students’ habits in reading (X) and their translation skills (Y) in sixth-semester English Education students at UIN Sunan Gunung Dajti Bandung in the 2019/2020 academic year. The research design was based on quantitative research and correlation methods. As a result, the variables are students’ habits in reading (X) as the independent variable and students’ translation skills (Y) as the dependent variable. The population are 6th-semester students of the Education Department of English UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The sample were 32 students from the population, as determined by Pearson's Product Moment Correlation. Translation scores and questionnaires on reading habits were the tools employed. This study's findings are there is no correlation between students' habits in reading and their translation skills. This is demonstrated by the fact that rxy (-0.107) is lower than rtable (0.349). The null hypothesis (Ho) is considered as being accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) as being rejected in this study, indicating that there is no correlation between students' habits in reading and their translation skills. In summary, there is no correlation between the two variables. However, the result of this study was influenced by the context of the text in the translation subject is not specific or general, which does not require specific prior knowledge, and the result could be different if there is no “neutral” option in the questionnaire.
