Abstract

Delivering feedback in the learning process is vitally important, especially in learning language. In common, feedback is divided into corrective and peer feedback. Correcting the student’s errors and enlightening the student’s knowledge are the examples of how feedback is indispensable in language learning. Nevertheless, studies exploring how the teacher delivers corrective feedback to student’s writing skills as a formative assessment are limited. This study explored how the teacher delivers corrective feedback to the students’ skills on writing comics in a Junior High School in Bandung. Moreover, through a qualitative approach, this study discusses the kind of method used by the teacher for delivering corrective feedback. Furthermore, the participant’s response to the feedback given by the teacher was also analyzed. In this study, one English teacher and sixteen students in a class of a private junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia have participated. The data was collected by the observation, interview, and an online questionnaire. The results revealed that teacher’s corrective feedback is a fundamental thing in developing student’s understanding and skills in writing skills. In addition, teacher feedback is needed by the students as evaluation tools for their writing product (comics). As a pedagogical implication, this study recommends that teachers should provide direct and indirect feedback. On the other hand, the students should take notice of the teacher’s corrective feedback on their writing skills. In conclusion, providing corrective feedback in the learning process is vitally important, especially in learning language. This study explored how the teacher delivered corrective feedback to the students’ skills on writing comics in a Junior High School in Bandung, Indonesia. The results revealed that teacher's corrective feedback is a fundamental thing in developing student's understanding and skills in writing skills.
