Abstract

This study examines the teacher’s selected strategies in teaching speaking fluency through short dialogue. Specifically, this research aims to achieve three objectives: 1) To describe the selected strategies the English teacher uses for teaching speaking to the 8th-grade students of MTS Yasiba Bogor. 2) To find out the problems of English teacher’s in applying strategies to teaching students’ speaking skills at the 8th-grade students of MTS Yasiba Bogor. 3) To discover the students’ responses toward the teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking fluency of short dialogue at MTS Yasiba Bogor. This study uses a qualitative research design with case study specifications. This steps of qualitative data analysis by Creswell (2012) were used for this study. The participants of this study were one English teacher and six students of Mts Yasiba Kota Bogor. Interviews were used to collect the data on teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking of short dialogue, the teacher’s problem in teaching speaking of short dialogue, and the student’s response toward the teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking of short dialogue. The result of this study has shown that the teacher used five strategies in teaching speaking of short dialogue, those are brainstorming, discussion, roleplay, answer and question and simulation. The teacher has several problems when teaching speaking of short dialogue, namely lack of vocabulary, understanding the purpose, and comprehending the discussion. However, the students have positive response toward the teacher’s strategy in teaching speaking of short dialogue that they can understand the material if the teacher explains English speaking calmly. In addition, students feel enjoyed when the teacher includes aspects of games to make English learning fun.This study recommends that English teachers can use those strategies in a short dialogue material especially in speaking classroom context.
