Abstract

The English literacy program is a part of the school program that must be implemented by EFL students. Literacy skills, especially English literacy, is one of the most important skills for EFL students. Thus, the English literacy program receives serious attention. Hence, this research concerns the perceptions of EFL teachers and students. It is intended to explore English literacy program based on the perceptions of EFL teachers and students. Therefore, this study aims to determine the perceptions of EFL teacher and students concerning the English literacy program in their school. The research used a qualitative research approach with case study design. The observation, documentation, interview, and questionnaire was used to collect the data of the EFL teacher and students’ perceptions of the English literacy program. The sample from the interview is an English teacher, while the sample from the questionnaire is 22 students in the ninth grade at one junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia. The results of the study show that the English literacy program implemented by the school has succeeded in achieving three stages of the implementation of the English literacy program. The three stages of English literacy program are habituation, development, and learning. These three stages aim to develop students' literacy skills, such as being able to understand texts, develop critical thinking skills, manage and process creative communication skills through responding to reading texts. Besides that, based on the teacher and students' perceptions, ELP is proven to be able to help increase reading interest and increase students' English vocabulary. By conducting this research, teachers and students can find out the effects and benefits of ELP so that students can participate actively in the implementation of ELP. In addition, this study concluded with suggestions for teachers. Teachers are expected to be creative in determining reading themes that suit students. Teachers should let students choose the books themselves to read so that students are interested in reading.
