Abstract

Classroom interaction is one of the crucial factors in the teaching-learning process. Classroom interaction refers to activities done by both teacher and students in the classroom. The interaction between the teacher and the students is still becoming a problem in the teaching-learning process. Thus, this research was intended to investigate the classroom interaction in listen-read-discuss (LRD) activities of the English lesson at the senior high school. This research aims to: 1) find out the implementation of listen-read-discuss (LRD) activities in the English lesson; 2) investigate the classroom interaction in the listen-read-discuss (LRD) activities of the English lesson. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study design. The participants of this research were an English teacher and students of class 10-B science program from senior high school in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The data obtained by using classroom observation and interview with the teacher. The observasion using the teories of Manzo & Casale (1985), Flanders (1970), Moore (1989), and Dagarin (2004). The data are analyzed by using six steps of qualitative procedures by Creswell (2012). This research found that the implementation of listen-read-discuss (LRD) activities in the English lesson conducted in three activities: listening activity, reading activity, and discussion activity. The findings also proposed that the classroom interaction in listen-read-discuss (LRD) activities there are teacher-students interaction, students-teacher interaction, student-student interaction, and students-content interaction. The teacher applied almost all types of teacher-students interactions, the teacher just did not criticize the students’ behavior. The students-teacher interaction showed students’ response, students’ initiation, confusion work-oriented and laughter. The types of students-student interaction found are the students’ discussion, sharing ideas or opinion, and students’ presentation. For students-content interaction, the students study about simple past tense and narrative text. The students also read the text or story related to the material and write information from the teacher. In conclusion, the classroom interaction in listen-read-discuss (LRD) activities of the English lesson has four interaction: teacher-student, student-teeacher, student-student, and student-content interaction. Furthermore, it would be better if the teacher pays attention to student behavior, encourage students to be more active in class by expressing their opinions using English. The students can interact more with the teacher and do not hesitate to give opinion and ideas. The students must also be able to discuss with anyone, not just close friends and frequent friends.
