Abstract

This research found students who have problems speaking English because of hesitation in their speaking abilities that caused a lack of motivation and low self-confidence. To overcome these problems, speaking abilities can be developed in various ways that enable students to increase their motivation in learning speaking and achieve their goals. One of them was the use of technological advancement. This research aimed: (1) to find out how is the learning speaking using cake application in EFL students’ self-confidence? (2) to find out how is students’ self-confidence during the learning speaking using cake application. This research used a qualitative method with a case study design. The participants of this research consisted of students of the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School MA Nurul Huda Kawali. The purposive sample was used in this research. This research took one class of students who used cake application. The data were gained from observations and questionnaires. The result of this study revealed two points based on the data collection analysis. First, the process of learning speaking using cake application was implemented with six steps: planning, Pre-Task, grouping, task cycle, question and answer, and closing. Second, the result of students’ self-confidence during the learning speaking using cake application was based on the self-confidence assessment rubric. Sixteen students got scores in the range of 71-85 which were categorized as high self-confidence and the rest 4 students got scores in the range of 58-69 which were categorized as medium self-confidence. As a result, they can increase their learning motivation and self-confidence. In conclusion, the learning speaking using cake application can explore students’ opportunities to practice speaking English more and build their self-confidence. Cake application helps students’ motivation during the learning speaking process. This study is recommended for teachers who need to improve students’ motivation and self-confidence in speaking English. The limitation of this study is that cake application is only used in classroom activities. Therefore, for future researchers, it is recommended to integrate cake application more than just in classroom activities to increase their opportunities to practice English more and increase their self-confidence in speaking English.
