Abstract

Teaching listening is one of the tasks teachers must do in teaching English to improve students' English abilities. Listening is one of the most critical components in a person's language ability test. In order to be a good listener, one must be able to comprehend what the speaker is saying. Based on the interviews, some showed that students were not enthusiastic, felt bored, and had difficulty learning to listen. This study's proposed effective classroom method is a short movie with captions to improve students' listening skills. The research was aimed (1) To find out how students' listening skills are exposed to a short movie with captions. (2) To find out how students' listening skills exposed to a short movie without captions. (3) To find out whether there is a significant difference between listening skills exposed to a short movie with captions and without captions. The design of this research is quasi-experimental research. The population in this study was class VIII SMPN 1 Telukjambe Timur Karawang in the 2022/2023 academic year. This study took one class as the sample, namely class VIII B. However, it was divided into two groups the experimental group consisting of 16 students and 16 students as the control group. The research instrument is a listening test used in the pre-test and post-test. Student scores were processed in statistical analysis. The statistical calculation of the post-test scores showed that using short movies with captions effectively improved students' listening skills. The result of the N-Gain analysis which the mean of the experimental group was 0,38 with a high (average) interpretation, while the mean of the control group was 0,7 with a high interpretation. The two means were obvious significantly different. Besides, it can be seen from the independent t-test. It showed that the t-count value was 2,381, while the t-table value was 2.005. it means the t-count was higher than the t-table. There was a significant difference in the students' listening skills between the experimental and control groups. However, using a short movie with captions as the media in learning English listening is beneficial. It makes students easier to comprehend the content and increases their listening ability.
