Abstract

This study aims to know about students' perspectives (both santri and non-santri), speaking problems, and the causes and reasons for those problems. This is a case study using qualitative approaches. This research is carried out at senior high schools in Islamic boarding schools in Tasikmalaya. Purposive sampling and classroom observation are used in this study to choose participants. Five of the 24 students that match the existing criteria are selected as participants. An in-depth interview is required in this study to obtain more information from participants. The interview was chosen to investigate the perspectives of santri and non-santri on speaking skills, the problems they experience, and the reasons why they confront these problems. Positive and negative perspectives are split among the students. Meanwhile, santri and non-santri encounter many challenges, including poor pronunciation, fluency, and limited vocabulary. Furthermore, the reasons for speaking difficulties include linguistic difficulties (English skills issues), educational problems (school activity and curriculum), and a lack of confidence (significant insecurity).
