Abstract

This research studies about flouting maxim in John Terry and Ashley Cole utterances in Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport Podcast. Therefore, the researcher did research with following research questions: 1) What maxim are flouted by John Terry in Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport Podcast? and 2) What is the meaning of flouting maxims used by John Terry and Ashley Cole in Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport Podcast?. This research using qualitative and quantitative method to interpreting and analysing the data and Grice (1975) as main theory to explain the flouting maxim of cooperative principle found in speakers utterance. The technique collecting data is document analysis. In analysing the data, the researcher were identifying, classifying, interpreting, and drawing the conclusion. After analyzing the data based on the statement of the problem in this study, it can be concluded that; First, the researcher found that there were several flouting maxims in John Terry's utterance as follows; 25 flouting maxim of quantity (64,8%), 1 flouting maxim of Quantity (3,7%), 8 flouting maxim of relation, 4 flouting maxim of manner (10,8%). And in Ashley Cole's utterance as follows; 21 flouting maxim of quantity (80,7%), 2 flouting maxim of quality (7,7%), 2 flouting maxim of relation (7,7%), 1 flouting maxim of manner (3,9%). Second, the researcher found several meaning of maxims flouted by John Terry's as follows; to explain something 10, to convince 10, to express feeling 8, to hide truth 1, to give unnecessary information 4, to expect something 6. And in Ashley Cole's utterance as follows; to explain something 8 times, to convince 6 times, to express feeling 6 times, to hide truth 4 times, to give unnecessary information 2 times, to expect something 1 times.
