Abstract

Writing skills are one of the important skills because good writing improves good communication, but some students are still confused about how to make good paragraphs, especially in writing summaries. Therefore, the Indonesian government set a solution, namely the School Literacy Movement (SLM). The aims of this study: (1) To investigate the implementation of teaching summary writing during the program of SLM in SMP Plus Al-Aqsha, (2) To know the progress of students’ summary writing during the program of SLM, (3) To reveal the students’ responses during the program of students’ summary writing. The researcher used a qualitative method with a case study that involved 9 students in the first grade of SMP Plus Al-Aqsha in the academic year of 2022. This research used a purposeful sampling technique. The data was obtained from observation, document analysis, and questionnaires. The result of this research shows that the implementation process of teaching English summary writing in SLM program was successfully implemented by the indicators. Moreover, the research shows good results by looking at the scores obtained by students after repeating learning and evaluating teaching English of summary writing in the SLM program. Finally, the students’ responses during the implementation of teaching English summary writing in SLM program were positive. Furthermore, the average score of literal comprehension of summary writing skills was acceptable: all students indicated the accuracy, focus, and convention well done. In conclusion, this research shows that teaching English summary writing in SLM program was useful for students’ writing skills, especially in summary writing. This study is recommended for schools that want to enrich literacy knowledge in their students to create better education.
