Abstract

The purpose of this research is to learn the role of Duolingo as a teaching speaking media. Its main objectives were to accomplish the following: 1) Investigating how the teacher implements Duolingo application as a teaching speaking medium, 2) Figuring out students’ performances on the use of Duolingo as a teaching speaking medium and 3) Investigating the students’ responses on the use of Duolingo in teaching speaking . One English instructor and 21 students from the ninth-grade of SMP IT Mifathul Huda participated in the project as a case study during the academic year of2022–2023. The researcher employed observation, questionnaire, document analysis, and interviews to get the data. The researcher observed the teacher using Duolingo as a teaching speaking media in the classroom. The researcher then gave the 21 students the self-report questionnaire and conducted interviews with 6 students that come from high and middle achiever levels. Then the writer did it to learn how they felt about the role of Duolingo as the teaching speaking medium. The study came up with 3 key conclusions. First, the process for teaching speaking using Duolingo as the medium had been effectively carried out at SMP IT Miftahul Huda, especially in the ninth grade. The observation sheet could be used to gradually complete most of the specified actions. Second, to evaluate students' speaking abilities while utilizing Duolingo as a speaking medium for instruction, the researcher used the Finachiaro and Sako 2008 rubric evaluation. The elements of the assessment were supplied to the instructor who was responsible for making a reliable evaluation, and she was the one who assigned the students' speaking performance scores. Based on their evaluation scores, all of the kids were displaying good results. Additionally, because all of the pupils had passed the KKM, the teacher just divided them into the two levels of high achiever and middle achiever. Last, Responses from the students were required in order to understand how they feel about Duolingo's use as the speaking medium for instruction in their class. Following the application to teach speaking using Duolingo as the medium, this conclusion was made. Eight questionnaire items and five interview items are included in the data gathering approaches. The students believed that Duolingo's use as a speaking teaching tool can increase their engagement in speaking classes and had a major impact on their speaking performances. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the role of Duolingo, as a teaching speaking medium, can be adapted and used in the classroom. The results of this study can therefore be taken into account by English instructors when selecting speaking strategies for their courses.
