Abstract

The thesis titled The Accentual meaning in Jim Kim's speech: "Building The New Social Contract" based on the use of sentence stress is the result of qualitative research that aimed to answer the formulation of the problem contained in this study, which includes how the use of sentence stress in Jim Kim's speech and what meanings emerge as a result of using sentence stress in Jim Kim's speech. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology in order to describe and demonstrate Jim's performance of sentence stress in his speech titled "Building The New Social Contract" delivered on October 2, 2018 at the Cernex Auditorium, Stanford University. This research utilizes both primary and secondary data sources. This study employs the data analysis procedures of Preparing and Organizing Data, Exploring Data, Describing Findings, Coding Data, Representing and Reporting Findings, and Interpreting the Meaning of Findings. According to the findings of this study, the accentual meaning is focused meaning that occurs as a result of the placement of sentence stress in a sentence. Despite the fact that fluent English speakers understand how to use sentence stress successfully, many second language learners dispute the existence of sentence stress. Then, in sentences, there are four sorts of stress: tonic stress, empathetic stress, contrastive stress, and new information stress. There are 38 different types of sentence stress data, with the following subcategory: 1) Tonic stress, with six data items; 2) Empathic stress, with 14 data items; 3) Contrastive stress, with ten data items; and 4) New information, with eight data items.
