Abstract

Reading materials are crucially important in terms of increasing the reading comprehension of students. Authentic reading material is one of the types of text that are used to influence the students’ reading interests and their reading skills. In comparison, the wrong of authentic text may not be relevant to the student’s needs in reading. Identifying the students’ challenges and reading strategies in comprehending authentic reading material reveals how far students’ ability in reading comprehension and examine the appropriate reading materials. In this study, a case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was employed to seize the goals: 1) to identify the EFL students’ challenges in comprehending authentic reading materials, 2) to describe the EFL students’ reading strategies in comprehending authentic reading materials. The participant of the research consists of students in the eleventh grade in the Indonesian secondary school of Darul Fatwa Senior High School, West Java. Purposive sampling was used for the selection of the sample. The sample included a total of 45 students. The research found two important findings. Firstly, there are some challenges faced by students in Indonesian Secondary School in comprehending authentic reading materials, these challenges are: (1) the text’s content, (2) the length of text and the complexity, (3) unfamiliar vocabulary, (4) the limitation of study time, and (5) the lack of reading strategies. Secondly, there are reading strategies used in comprehending authentic reading materials. Those reading strategies such as previewing the text, using a dictionary, using context clues, guessing and predicting. Then, this study can be information sources about challenges and reading strategies they faced when they comprehend authentic reading materials.
