Abstract

An Undergraduate Thesis, Department of English Literature, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Social problems in film are concerned with the special functions of human beings as social animals and with the social institutions and traditions they have created. In addition, characterization in film is related with the cast also revealed visually and instantaneously. This research is focused on analyzing the characters of heroes and villains in the film Mulan (2020) which are caused by social problems that occur. Fistly the researcher analyzes the characterization of the character hero and villain that appear in Mulan (2020) and secondly the researcher analyzes how the contribution of social problems has an impact on the characterization of Hero and Villain in Mulan (2020). The researcher uses Petrie & Boggs theory related to characterization and social problems, in addition to supporting theory, the researcher uses Ffion Lindsay theory related to heroes and villains. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods and content analysis, which is used to analyze problems that occur in depth in finding answers. The researcher found 63 data of characterization of hero and villain in the film Mulan (2020). From characterization through appearance there are 11 data shows Hero’s characterization and 3 data shows Villain’s characterization, from characterization through dialogue there are 11 data shows Hero’s characterization and 3 data shows Villain’s characterization, from characterization through external action there are 20 data shows Hero’s characterization and 8 data shows Villain’s characterization, and the last from characterization through reaction of other character there are 6 data shows Hero’s characterization and 1 data shows Villain’s characterization. In addition, for social problems, the researcher found 19 data that shows how social problems impact the Hero and Villain character in the film Mulan (2020). As for the impact of social problem to Hero character, these are 15 data found. Meanwhile, for the impact of social problems on Villain character, these are 4 data found. The results of this research show that in the film Mulan (2020) contained social problems that impacted the characterization of hero and villain. Based on the analysis it is evident that the social problems that occur in film have a significant impact on the characterization of heroes and villains. Thus, in the film Mulan (2020) it can be concluded that social problems are the main trigger for the formation of hero and villain characterization.
