Abstract

This research was intended to determine students’ perceptions of the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation. Specifically, there are two objectives of the research: 1) To find out students' perceptions about the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation; 2) To find out students' challenges about the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation. The qualitative approach was used in this research with a descriptive research design. The participant of the research is students of the eight-grade at SMP Asyifa 44 Cikalong Wetan. To collect the data, this study used observation, a questionnaire, and an interview. The observation was held to observe students’ challenges in learning pronunciation through tongue twister. Moreover, the questionnaire and Interview were taken to the nine students, all pronunciation proficiency levels. Questionnaires and interviews were used to obtain the data about students' perceptions of the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation. The finding concluded two items. First, students’ perceptions of the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation. The results showed that students had positive and negative perceptions regarding the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation. From students’ positive point of view, students agree that the use of tongue twister gave them better experience in learning pronunciation because tongue twister can create an exciting class atmposphere, make them more active in class, more confident and increase their English pronunciation. Meanwhile from the student’s negative point of view, they perceive that the use of tongue twister is requires more time, the class atmosphere is too noisy, and difficult for them because of the pronunciation on tongue twister is too fast. Second, regarding students challenges of the use of tongue twister in learning pronunciation, the result showed that there are several challenges faced by students in learning pronunciation through tongue twister. Those challenges are mother tongue interference, little amount of exposure to the target language, sound system differences between first language and target language, influence of spelling on pronunciation, and lacking of motivation.
