Abstract

This study examines the image of women in Theodore Melfi’s film Hidden Figures (2016) using a feminist literary criticism perspective. The purpose of this study is first, to identify the image of the women main character depicted in the film Hidden Figures, and second to identify how the image of the women main character has an effect on their struggle in the film Hidden Figures. This study uses feminist literary criticism theory. Feminist literary criticism theory is used to analyze the image of the main women character in the film Hidden Figures including the self-image and the social image of women. The data collection method used in this study was observation and documentation with the note-taking technique. The data analysis method used is content analysis method. The results of this research analysis are in the form of conclusions about the image of women and the struggles of the women main characters in descriptive form. The results of this study are classified into two, namely as follows: (1) the image of the women main character in the film Hidden Figures consists of two elements, namely the self-image and the social image of women, women’s self-image can be seen through the physical and psychological aspects of women while the social image of women can be seen through their lives in the household and life in the society about how women’s relationships in the society; (2) the image of the women main character depicted in the film Hidden Figures has an effect on their struggle for rights as a black women worker.
