Abstract

A declarative statement or a phrase that expresses the veracity of information is an assertive speech act. A natural action that is carried out through voice or utterance is an assertive speech act. Additionally, assertive speech acts are a real depiction that influences listeners to believe what the speaker says.Consequently, the researcher is motivated to examine this subject through research questions: 1) What types of assertive speech act appeared in Greta Thunberg’s speech at UN Climate Action Summit 2019? 2) What are the functions of assertive speech act that can be observed in Greta Thunberg’s speech at UN climate action summit 2019? This study applied a descriptive qualitative methodology. George Yule and John Searle were the two primary theorists cited in this study. Greta Thunberg's 2019 UN Climate Change Action Summit address was analysed for statistics, and the results revealed that Greta Thunberg’s speech used 26 assertive in which delineated to 6 (six) data on asserting type, 3 (three) data on concluding type, 9 (nine) data on describing type, 5 (five) data on assessing type, and 3 (three) data on complaining type. Regarding the second objective, which described the functions of assertive speech act, the results showed that assertive speech act were used by the speaker for 26 times. It consisted of 8 (eight) illocutionary forces which were stating, stressing, reporting, notifying, complaining, informing, protesting, and concluding. The researcher draws the conclusion from the data analysis that the most common assertive kind was the asserting or stating type, in which many of the utterances featured positive or negative assertions about the speaker, the young generation, and the governments. Additionally, the assert function was the most dominant type, based on the speech types and speech functions, indicating that the listeners trusted her speech
