Abstract

Communication is a very important thing for human life. Language is used in the process to communicate with each other. Many expressions are used in a language that refers to someone, something, or some idea. Linguists use the term deixis to refer to such words or expressions, one of the deixis expressions is social deixis. Social deixis is a reference expressed based on social differences that affect the role of the speaker and listeners. This research aimed to find out the types and functions of social deixis in President Biden’s utterance. The problem of this research is formulated in two research questions: 1) How is social deixis used in President Biden’s Remark in the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 2) What is the function of social deixis in President Biden’s Remark in the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. This research used Levinson’s theory of social deixis (1983) and other related theories. This research also used a qualitative method and content analysis approach to analyze the data. The data were collected by being searched, identified, recorded, and stored in the data table. The utterances were transferred into the dataset, then analyzed, sorted, interpreted, classified, and concluded. There are 42 data indicated as social deixis. The findings show that there are two types of social deixis, namely relational and absolute. There are three types of relational forms, namely, 2 referent honorifics, 26 bystander honorifics, 10 formality levels, and no addressee honorifics found. There are 4 data of absolute (absolute) consisting of 2 data of authorized speakers and 2 data of authorized recipients. In addition, four social deixis functions were found in this research: 4 data to indicate social status differentiator, 1 data to indicate politeness, 35 data to indicate social identity, and 2 data to indicate closeness relationship.
