Abstract

Students in Junior High School still have assumptions that English learning is difficult, because the most of the students feel difficult to understand the meaning of words, especially in teaching reading, they still have difficulties in reading because they do not have a sufficient vocabulary, so they cannot understand the text easily. Finally, students were prefer to be passive in teaching learning process. Based on the problems, teaching reading should be learned through appropriate strategy to improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension. Based on the background of the study, the researcher states that the research questions of the study are (1) To what extent is the students’ ability on reading descriptive text by using PQ4R? (2) To what extent is the students’ ability on reading descriptive text by using conventional method? (3) How significant is the influence of PQ4R strategy in improving students’ understanding on reading descriptive text? The purposes of the study are (1) To find out the students’ ability on reading descriptive text by using PQ4R. (2) To find out the students’ ability on reading descriptive text by using conventional method. (3) To know the effectiveness of PQ4R strategy in improving students’ understanding on reading descriptive text. The method of the research used in this study is experimental study. Techniques of collecting data in this research were observation and test. There are two kind of tests, pre-test and post-test. This research focused on the implementation of PQ4R strategy. The results of the research were (1) The score of the post-test from experimental class was higher than the score of the post-test from control class. The average post-test score of experimental class is 77.76, while the average post-test score of control class is 71.17. Based on that score, researcher analyzed the data using t-test formula, and found that tcount is 4.476. then determining score ttable from the table distribution t with the tariff of significance 1% and degree of freedom 60, the result of ttable is 2.66 (2) There was a significant difference between the post-test score of experimental class and control class. The score of tcount (4.476) is higher than score of ttable (2.66), hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Furthermore, based on explanation above, the researcher concludes that teaching reading by using PQ4R is more effective than by using conventional method. PQ4R strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension. So, it is suggest that PQ4R strategy can be used for the students who want to improve their reading comprehension on descriptive text.
