Abstract

People do not only speak what they thought but they give influence through their words as well. The ability to build a good and influential speech is needed to evoke people’s desire in doing a good change. The good and influential speech is not only consisted of the good words to build a content that relates to the audience, for more, regarding to the rhetoric concept, it must have a good arrangement in order to make the audience understand the point of the speech as well. Looking at the relation between the utterances and rhetoric concept in speech, therefore the researcher did research which is focusing on Steve Jobs’ speech at Stanford Commencement Address (2005) with two research objectives; to identify and analyze the kind of representative illocutionary act and how it relates to the classical rhetoric in Steve Jobs’ speech at Stanford Commencement Address (2005). This research used a qualitative descriptive method using the theory of Searle (1979) to explain the kinds of representative act and the theory of Aristotle (1964) to explain the arrangement of speech in classical rhetoric. Based on the data analysis, there are 121 representative utterances appeared in the speech which is divided into statement (84), explanation (15), assertion (12), and description (10). The research results showed that 35 representative utterances among them were seen in the elements of arrangement of speech of classical rhetoric. The most frequently used element was statement of fact with 12 utterances which showed that Jobs wanted the audience to get a broader context of the speech. He wanted the audience to be inspired and influenced as well by telling the details story with the use of statement of fact. In conclusion, the speech showed its effectiveness with the use of good representative utterances which build the good arrangement of the speech and generated the good influential speech.
