Abstract

Classroom management is a key factor in determining the success of the teaching and learning process (Cruickshank, Jenkins and Metcalf, 2006). This is because the classroom is one of the most important places in the educational process. Thus, this research attempts to explore what problems are faced by the teachers and learning speaking online and how they cope with the problems during online EFL speaking classrooms. The research was aimed 1) to describe an EFL the teacher’s problems managing on-line EFL speaking classrooms, 2) to describe the strategies to cope with the problems faced by the teachers in managing online EFL speaking classrooms. The research used a qualitative method specifically a case study design involving observations, interviews, and documentations as the data collection technique. The participant in this research was a teacher who teaches speaking skill and some students in an Islamic Senior High School at Pangandaran. The result of this research there ware several problems faced by teacher in managing online classes are as follows: (1) lack of teacher competence, (2) the connectivity, (3) a lot of noise, (4) lack of learning facilities and preparation, (5) having to sufficient vocabulary and inaccurate pronounciation. This research also obtained strategies to cope with the problems in the implementation of online classes during the covid-19 pandemic in English speaking in Madrasah Aliyah Darul Istiqomah Pangandaran are as follows: (1) conducting meetings with students, (2) providing encouragement and motivation to students, (3) giving specific punishments and rules, (4) utilizing learning platforms such as Whatsapp Group, (5) teaching speaking using video/voice note, (6) providing feedback.
